Terumo, a Japanese medical device company, appointed AXIS House to design flexible and inviting workspaces for their new UK HQ. They requested on-brand spaces that would work in two key ways – encourage hybrid staff into the office more often and create a welcoming regional hub for the European team.

Zoning the offices into four distinct areas – a branded reception space, an open-plan work zone, a boardroom, and a café-style breakout area – allowed for improved efficiency, productivity and collaboration. We also introduced biophilic elements to enhance wellbeing and provide a connection with nature.

“This was the first ever fit-out project I’d worked on, so we chose AXIS House as much for their friendliness as for their knowledge and expertise.”.

Creating a cohesive flow, we designed welcoming, sociable spaces to promote wellbeing and collaboration.

Moving from offices set over two floors, the team at Terumo wanted to lose the sense of disconnect and create a new feeling of togetherness for their single floor HQ at Meadows Business Park in Camberley.

Branding was also a key objective. With a requirement to host regular meetings for the European leadership team, the design of the new offices reflects the Terumo brand while presenting a welcoming and attractive environment for staff and visitors alike.

Design details

  • The bold red and green tones of the Terumo logo were reinterpreted as muted shades of burgundy and fern to create a relaxed and inviting environment.
  • Attractive planting in long, rectangular troughs achieves a distinction between the walkways and desking areas. This has the additional benefit of adding to the homely, welcoming feel.
  • Crittall-style glazed partitions create pleasing, clean lines while making the most of the external views and allowing natural light to flow throughout the space.
  • The branding wall in the boardroom celebrates company culture and provides a focal point to unite the team around their common goal.
  • Terrazzo flooring in the café area pairs with crisp, white kitchen units for a contemporary aesthetic aligning with Terumo’s clinical focus.
The fully adjustable sit-stand desks are positioned as close as possible to the envelope glazing to maximise the benefits of natural light.

Prioritising sustainability

In keeping with Terumo’s environmental aims, we reused existing furniture wherever possible and sourced new fittings from sustainable manufacturers.

The boardroom chairs, for example, were moved from the old premises to the new, and some of the existing carpet was also given a second lease of life.

A focus on wellbeing

Biophilic elements such as greenery, nature-inspired colours and an abundance of natural light enhance wellbeing and provide a gratifying connection between outside and in.

Our WELL accredited designers opted for contemporary glass walls for the meeting rooms and café area to maximise natural light and encourage social interaction.

Getting the desired result with increased attendance

The latest feedback from our client confirms the brief was well and truly met. Staff at Terumo Camberley love their new offices so much they’re choosing to come in even on their non-mandatory days. Exactly the outcome the team wanted to achieve to improve the sense of company culture and cohesion.
