When The Royal College of Psychiatrists adopted a hybrid working model following the pandemic, they soon realised their London head office was in urgent need of an upgrade. The objective was to create a modern and agile workspace that could welcome its international membership body while serving its hybrid employees.

AXIS House was brought on board to redesign the 30,000 sq ft head office to create a hybrid working environment that would enable The College to fulfil its strategic aims to enhance staff wellbeing, improve employee retention and adopt new methodologies.

AXIS House really listened to us and understood what was important. The final design was born out of a detailed consultation and followed a clear design language.

Director, Royal College of Psychiatrists

Appearing effortlessly elegant, the spaces we’ve created for The College meet the needs of in-office staff while allowing visiting members and hybrid staff to integrate with ease

Starting with our consultation process, we conducted a 12-week review of the existing premises at Prescot Street. This included a series of staff consultations and space planning studies which informed a creative design solution to address every aspect of the brief.

Our design proposal established an elevated aesthetic of clean lines and calming materials in keeping with the wellbeing aims outlined by our client. Alongside the elegant spaces and highly professional feel, we added homely touches such as wood tones, planting and soft seating to recognise and replicate aspects of the home working experience.

Design details

  • Building upon a neutral foundation of grey, beige and wood tones, subtle accents of colour were added throughout the space to create a soothing welcome for staff and visitors.
  • The stylish reception area sets the tone for the contemporary aesthetic with a slatted wood desk and coordinated wall cladding.
  • A recharge room was introduced along with accessible tea and coffee points to mirror some of the attractive elements of working from home.
  • Gender neutral washrooms were also incorporated into the design to align with The College’s inclusivity goals.

An inclusive place to work

One of The College’s key aims was to achieve a welcoming and inclusive environment to acknowledge and celebrate individuality.

As well as creating light, airy and accessible spaces throughout the head office, we adapted the entrance atrium to include braille signage and audio loops.

Introducing a choice of workstations

Recognising the needs of the individual, our design incorporated a wide choice of workstations.

As well as a range of desking areas, there are privacy pods, glazed meeting rooms, an impressive atrium with angular seating, and a kitchen with refectory-style tables and benches.

Achieving peace of mind

The project successfully delivered on its key objectives of enhancing workplace wellbeing, creating a sustainable hybrid working culture, and offering an outstanding membership experience.

The team at The Royal College of Psychiatrists praised our role in the success of the fit-out: “The final design came together very well. We were delighted with how closely the AXIS House team worked with us throughout the process.”
