Previously dark and segmented, the old environment placed unnecessary strain on staff and students. Spaces felt cluttered, overwhelming and hard to navigate. The brief was learner-centric, focusing on experience and layouts designed to support independence with a sensitive, sensory approach.
AxisHouse was chosen to deliver a Fit-Out that balanced wellbeing with functionality. The College required adaptable zoning and robust materials, that would be easy to clean and maintain. And the whole project had to be delivered within a tight, non-negotiable timescale – in preparation for the new term!

Different settings support different moments; promoting dignity and choice. Students can choose what works best for them at different points in the day. “you matter; your future matters”
The building shifts in tone as individuals move through it. Ground floor areas feel more welcoming and approachable, while first floor classrooms become more focused and technology-led, supporting concentration and a sense of progression.
As the strip-out progressed, unforeseen challenges did require problem solving. Regular communication and a proactive site presence ensured issues were resolved quickly, with the client kept fully informed and confident throughout delivery.
The ground floor is the pastoral heart of the building. Soft, flowing forms and warm tones give students the opportunity to regulate, socialise or simply pause. Every curve and colour was chosen to feel gentle on the senses for neurodiverse learners.
Two kitchen areas and soft seating areas provide space to unwind between sessions and practise daily living, while medical rooms with showers and specialist beds allow care tasks to be demonstrated safely, supported by hygienic, easy-clean finishes and accessible fixtures.
Upstairs, the atmosphere shifts to enable focused, screen-based learning. Darker tones, structured layouts and strong acoustic control signal maturity and focus, helping students concentrate during digital and technology-led sessions.
AxisHouse worked in close partnership with the estates team to deliver a supportive and practical learning environment with learner aspirations and self-belief at its heart - creating a building staff feel rightly proud of and which students described as a real “wow” moment on their first day back.
