defence office fit-out - private client reception area

Occupied for more than 40 years, the tired workplace had evolved through a series of incremental changes. While operationally successful, the office environment no longer reflected the organisation’s growth, brand standards or workplace culture. Reception areas felt very dated, employee facilities lacked appeal and workspace layouts were rooted in outdated ways of working.

With the site remaining fully operational throughout, the challenge extended far beyond design. The client needed a phased refurbishment programme to modernise the whole site. As works progressed, significant hidden electrical and infrastructure issues were uncovered, requiring careful communication, revised scopes and pragmatic delivery without compromising overall objectives.

You listened to what we wanted and you didn't let us steer ourselves in the wrong direction. You knew what we needed. Even when we weren't sure, you showcased the benefits of the approach. We listened, and it really works. Everybody loves it. It’s made such a massive difference.

Executive Assistant

The client wanted to fit in more desks. We recommended a more modern approach future-proofed for growth. Today, that foresight is paying dividends as new staff onboard

This defence office fit-out project began as a workplace refresh but evolved into a complete rethinking of how the environment could support future operational requirements and improve employee wellbeing. Through staff consultation and a collaborative design process, AxisHouse challenged assumptions around desk density, storage and space planning.

Rather than maximise occupancy, the design focused on flexibility, creating an environment capable of supporting growth while providing employees with greater choice in how they work, meet and collaborate.
Decisions made during design are already proving their value, as the business continues to expand and new starters are perfectly accommodated, without being crammed in.

Scandinavian minimalism, strategically applied

  • Workplace reconfiguration creates a clear distinction between focused work stations, open desking, storage and informal interaction.
  • A compliant reception area with repositioned staircase now functions as both a secure checkpoint and a welcoming arrival, using bespoke joinery, layered lighting and carefully planned visitor management.
  • Timber finishes, fluted detailing, soft fabrics, wall panelling and acoustic elements introduce warmth, texture and comfort across the workplace
  • Workstations positioned to optimise natural daylight, with sit-stand desks at every bank and supported by blinds and planting for a more comfortable working environment.
  • Meeting pods, high-back seating and breakout areas create a range of options for informal conversations, focused discussions and day-to-day collaboration.
  • The canteen is now a social destination, with bespoke cabinetry, feature lighting and branded elements encouraging employees to step away from their desks and socialise.
  • A delicate, stylish integration of brand colours, graphic elements and typography connects the workplace to the organisation’s global identity without overpowering the overall aesthetic.

More than a workplace refresh

Across the site, AxisHouse delivered new partitioning, flooring, furniture, bespoke joinery, lighting, HVAC upgrades, signage and workplace technology. A carefully curated furniture package helped create a more cohesive environment, while hidden electrical and compliance issues, discovered during construction were rectified as part of the wider programme.

Social Spaces Reimagined

Multiple tea points and social spaces are distributed throughout the workplace, creating natural opportunities for interaction beyond formal meeting settings. Bespoke cabinetry, integrated planting, café-style seating and residential-inspired detailing elevate these everyday amenities.

Live Environment Project Delivery

Delivered in phases while the building remained operational, the refurbishment combined demolition, new partitioning, flooring, joinery, furniture, lighting and MEP upgrades within a cohesive design language.

The completed workplace now creates a stronger connection between people, place and brand, supporting operational performance, talent attraction and the firm’s workplace ambitions.
